On Saturday 29 March 2020 around 18.15 the police found the lifeless bodies of retired Turkish interpreter Hikmet Kandemir (64), her daughter-in-law Gulcan Kandemir and her son Atakan Kandemir (6) and daughter Deniz Kandemir (2) in a house on the Dasseburcht in Etten-Leur.
Onur Kandemir
Suspect is Onur Kandemir, born and raised in Etten-Leur (33 years). According to local residents he is a friendly man and is said to have moved in with his mother a few months ago. An arrest warrant has been issued in which the authorities express their concern for the psychological well-being of this four-time murder suspect. Onur Kandemir would be a danger to others and to himself.

Rumours go around about domestic violence, a Turkish reporter sketches the following scenario: When Hikmet Kandemir's friends couldn't reach her, they sent a message to the son Onur Kandemir. In response he sent photographs of his mother, wife and children and wrote: "they're very sick, they can't talk (or speak)". The incident was immediately reported to the police. They entered the house and discovered four bodies and established that Onur Kandemir was no longer reachable by telephone and had probably fled.

A neighbour tells us that the houses have small walls and that she hasn't heard the children since Friday evening.

A meeting for local residents in Etten-Leur can unfortunately not be organised because of gathering bans imposed to limit the spread of the coronavirus. People who need it can therefore receive psychological help by telephone.

The family was known to the local mosque. The mosque also offered help and assistance.

On 31 March Onur Kandemir was arrested in Etten-Leur after he had been recognized by several people as the wanted murder suspect. The police hope that Onur Kandemir can give them more insight into his motives.
