The woman was found around 01:15 by emergency services, who had been alerted to an incident at the residence. Upon arrival, she was already deceased. The arrested man was present in the home at the time and remains in custody for questioning.

According to police, it was confirmed on Wednesday that the death was the result of violence. No further details about the exact circumstances have been released. The investigation is ongoing.

The couple had two children and had lived in Zaltbommel for approximately eight years. It is not clear whether the children were present in the home during the incident.

Police are urging any witnesses to come forward but have not shared additional details out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation.

If the investigation shows that there was no honor-related motive, the case will be removed from the archive.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
