Shooting in Sneek, Netherlands: Daniel el Makrini (32) shoots pregnant ex-girlfriend and commits suicide

Pregnant woman
Age: 33
Attempted murder: September 25, 2025
Location: Sneek, Netherlands
Origin: Unknown
Perpetrator: ex-boyfriend
On the evening of Thursday, September 25, 2025, police received a report around 9:30 PM about a shooting in a yellow apartment building in Sneek. Emergency services responded en masse, including multiple police units, ambulances, and a trauma helicopter. In the top-floor apartment, officers found a severely injured woman and Daniel el Makrini, who had taken his own life.

The police believe that El Makrini first shot his ex-girlfriend and then committed suicide. A firearm was found, but no further criminal investigation will follow since the suspect is deceased. According to neighbors, the relationship was troubled and drug problems may also have played a role.

The fact that the woman was pregnant makes the tragedy even more harrowing. Shortly before the shooting, photos of the unborn child's ultrasound appeared on social media.

This attempted murder may not belong in the archive of honor-related violence because drugs could have been involved, but the relationship problems suggest that it could also be related.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
