Honour killing

Devilish Pakistani father is suspected of burning his two daughters and four grandchildren alive because one wanted to marry for love

Honour killing story

Khurshid Mai and Fauzia Bibi
Born: 1986, 2002
Burned alive: October 16, 2021
Location: Muzaffargargh district of Pakistan
Origin: Pakistan
Children: Khurshid Mai: 3 (2, 6 and 13 years old), Fauzia Bibi: 1 (4 months old)
Perpetrator: their father/ grandfather Manzoor Hussain is accused
In 2020, Fauzia (19) and Mehboob Ahmad married for love against the wishes of her father Manzoor Hussain, because he had wanted to arrange her marriage.

The sisters Khurshid Mai and Fauzia Bibi live with their husbands and children in a shared home in central Pakistan.

Because of rivalry and discontent between the families over that love marriage, Manzoor Hussain allegedly set fire to the house where his daughters lived on October 16 with disastrous results. His daughters, Khurshid Mai's husband and four grandchildren did not survive the attack.

Mehboob Ahmad stated to the police that he was not present at the time of the fire. He returned from work and saw his house on fire and Manzoor Hussain and Sabir Hussain fleeing the scene.

The Pakistani police are looking for Manzoor Hussain. We would greatly appreciate any further information!

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
