Perpetrator: a Tunisian (41 years old at the time of the crime)
On the night of July 12, 2019, a Tunisian meets his 36-year-old ex-wife on the streets of Salzgitter at 2 am. She belongs to a Lebanese clan, 2 sisters and another related woman are present. The ages of the women are indicated as 20-52 years.

The Tunisian takes a knife out of his car and stabs all 4 women. The knife gets stuck in the head of one of the women. She undergoes emergency surgery and survives. Another woman is seriously injured, the other two slightly. The perpetrator flees, but then surrenders to the police.

It turns out that there is already a longer stalking story and that the Tunisian is suspected of having set fire to his ex-wife's car in September 2018.

In the reporting it is not clear which of the 4 women had the knife in her head, probably not the ex-wife. The couple has several children, the number is unknown. The real names of those involved are not known.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
