Honour killing story

Olga
born: 1989
set on fire: July 13, 2019
Residence: Cologne
Origin: Perpetrator: Iran
Children: 2
Perpetrator: Jawed S. (36 years old at the time of the crime)
Jawed is married, probably to an Iranian woman. He has had a second wife for 8 years and with her 2 children. Her name is Olga, she is probably Russian or Polish.

In the night of July 13, 2019 Jawed feigns a car accident by driving his car "controlled" against a tree. Then he pours gasoline on his passenger Olga, but saves her from the flames. The victim lies in an artificial coma for 1 month and has to stay in hospital for another month. For weeks Jawed visits her in the hospital - until he is arrested.

The motive: Olga had left him. The perpetrator wants to mutilate her, but wants to make it look like an accident. More than 40 percent of the skin is burned. While Jawed is in custody, his first wife/marital partner gets a divorce.

In April 2020, the process of arson and infliction of serious bodily harm begins in the Cologne Regional Court. Olga testifies that she did not know about the first woman, she had known the father of her children as "Ali". However, the relationship was violent. There is talk of control, cutting off hair, rape - also of her sister. In May, the perpetrator is sentenced to 11.5 years imprisonment.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
