Justice for Shaheena Shaheen Committee demands police arrest murder suspects and stop dawdling

On behalf of the Justice for Shaheena Shaheen Committee, her sister Masooma Shaheen met with lawyer Jareen Dashti because the killers of renowned artist and journalist Shaheena Shaheen have still not been arrested by Pakistani authorities. She received an update on the progress of the case.

After the meeting, Masooma Shaheen said that Turbat police constantly played the role of silent bystander by comforting the child. In today's age of science and technology, a suspect can be easily tracked down by various means. The suspect is currently in Karachi.

Shaheena Shaheen was shot dead with two bullets in the head on September 5, 2020 in Turbat, Balochistan, presumably at the behest of her husband.

We appeal to the Pakistan Home Minister, IG Police Balochistan, DIG Makran to immediately arrest the main suspect named in the report (FIR).

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.
wants to end the relationship.
was the victim of rape or sexual assault.
was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
