A young girl, aged 15, was killed on June 30, 2023, in Bisaoli village, located in Hardoi district, Uttar Pradesh, India. The perpetrator of this tragic incident is the girl's father, Anangpal. During a family visit, Anangpal attacked his daughter with a sharp object and left her body in a field. Furthermore, he injured a village puppy and spread blood in his brother and sister-in-law's house.

After the murder, Anangpal falsely accused his brother, sister-in-law, and another villager of the crime, and even filed charges against them. However, during interrogations, his statements were inconsistent and he became entangled in lies. Eventually, after intensive interrogation by officers from the Pachdevra police station, Anangpal confessed to the murder. He claimed that his wife had left him due to his brother's alleged extramarital affair and that he had observed his daughter conversing with a young man from the village.

Anangpal has been arrested and will face legal proceedings in court to answer for his actions.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
