Honour killing story

Frixos Gedas
Born: 1982
Shot dead: 4 January 2007
residence: Berlin
Origin: Victim: Greece, Perpetrator: Turkey
Children: probably none
Perpetrator: Okhan Y., at the time of the crime 22 years
A teenage girl falls in love with Frixos, a Greek who is eight years older. In June 2005, she is then 17 years old she breaks off the relationship with him. They say he used drugs and is a criminal (and is known to the police). But it is also possible that her family wants to marry her off to a compatriot and therefore insists on a divorce. It is possible that her nephew Okhan will be assigned to take matters into their own hands. He is 21 and can still be tried under juvenile law.

Okhan meets his cousin's ex-boyfriend in a parking lot in Berlin-Rudow, ostensibly for a conversation. It is perhaps more likely to be suspected that the cousin wants to restore family honor before his cousin's planned wedding.

The young Turk fires the entire magazine of his rifle empty. Newspapers say it looked like an execution.

In April 2008, the perpetrator is sentenced by the Berlin District Court to seven years of juvenile detention for manslaughter. The co-defendant Murat A. (24 years old) is acquitted. During the trial, there is fighting between the two families in the corridors of the court.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
