Honour killing story

Hanna
born: 1998
stabbed to death: July 3, 2020
Location: Leverkusen
Origin: Ethiopia
Children: no
Perpetrator: Tekeste G. (47 years at the time of the crime)
Tekeste has 3 children with his first wife in Ethiopia. Probably his 2nd wife is a German, through whom he has a residence permit. He also lives separated from her.

For months he stalked the 25 year younger Hanna, who came to Germany at the age of 17. Apparently he urges her to marry him. She goes to the police, but doesn't press charges (despite a threat with a hammer).

On 3 July 2020 Tekeste waits for Hanna at her house in Leverkusen-Schlebusch and stabs her. Hanna dies in the hall.

The police storm the perpetrator's apartment and find a roommate. The next day, the perpetrator is arrested.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
