Hyusine and Ibrahim have been married for 23 years. They live in Berlin-Neukölln and have 2 children together.

In the early morning of 21 June 2014 Hyusine is still asleep. Ibrahim comes to her bed and hits her head with a hammer. The blows are already fatal. He also stabs her in the chest with a knife.

Afterwards Ibrahim goes to an acquaintance and confesses the deed. Together they go to the crime scene. The acquaintance calls the police. Ibrahim flees, but is later arrested near the crime scene.

The trial before the Court of Berlin will begin in December 2014. Ibrahim does not want to remember the crime. After that, the reporting was stopped. It is possible that the perpetrator will be sent to a psychiatric ward.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
