Milad is a Christian from Iraq. He works as a hairdresser in Salzgitter and is together with a Syrian woman who is Muslim. Her family doesn't like it because she is "promised" to a cousin. There are several lawsuits pending, which are not yet closed. Among other things, there are death threats. The clan has gradually moved to Germany as of 2013.

On January 26, 2019, the Syrian brother shoots his sister's friend next to a parking lot in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt. Paramedics take the seriously injured man to the hospital, where he dies. The perpetrator is arrested.

The sister goes into hiding. Her family is looking for her.

In August the trial starts at the regional court of Braunschweig. It becomes known that the perpetrator's sister was contemplating conversion to Christianity. Her mother points this out to her: If someone leaves Islam, this person may be killed. In the courtroom the perpetrator calls his sister a traitor. He stores her number in his mobile under "dirt".

In September, the parents and the younger brother of the perpetrator will be indicted.

The victim's mother lives in witness protection. She heard the 5 fatal shots while she was on the phone with her son. Even her lawyer doesn't know where she lives. It is known that the father of the perpetrator has threatened the victim with death before.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
